In the eighth issue of its GEARS inline customer magazine, Klingelnberg presents the projects and developments it has advanced in recent months, with a special focus on trends and developments in renewable energy, particularly wind energy. An exclusive interview on this topic with Gary Gu, Executive Director the Asian gear box manufacturer NGC Transmission Equipment, reveals some fascinating responses.
The Latest Gear Cutting Tool Innovations and Trends
Quality through Roll Testing The Höfler Cylindrical Gear Roll Testing Machine R 300 is the latest machine development in the area of cylindrical gear technology. Designed for all five roll testing methods, this compact machine is the ideal high-precision testing technology solution for anyone who wants to combine inspection cycles and reduce disassembly costs while benefiting from a user-friendly design.
For those customers doing smaller to medium batch sizes, DMG MORI offers its gearMILL software solution that enables a standard lathe, mill or multitasking machine, outfitted with standard off-the-shelf tools, to deliver a highly finished gear that is almost done-in-one and ready for heat treat.
So the two powerhouse companies decided to partner on commercializing the new technology. DMG MORI developed software that develops the toolpath based on the gear shape, and now InvoMilling is added to hobbing and flank milling with an end-mill as the choices customers now have to make a gear on a multitasking machine with gearMILL.
Sandvik Coromant developed its InvoMilling gearcutting program and CoroMill 171 and 172 indexable carbide disk cutters to provide maximum flexibility for its customers who wanted to manufacture gears in smaller lot sizes, typically for applications like heavy trucks, agricultural and construction equipment. Sandvik Coromant worked initially and proved the concept with DMG MORI, which integrated the software into its CNC controls. InvoMilling will soon be available through other major machine tool makers as well.
Liebherr Gear Technology (Saline, MI), for example, takes a fairly traditional approach, but is not afraid of new ideas. Its new hobbing machine for work up to 180 mm, the LC 180, includes an integrated Chamfer Cut unit for deburring and chamfering the face edges. After hobbing, the Chamfer Cut tool generates precise and reproducible chamfers that are increasingly demanded by the automakers for smoother gear engagement and quieter transmissions.
This technology is not limited to the auto industry. It can be of benefit to any gearmaker whose current procedures are too time-consuming, whose tooling costs are too high, or those who need to take follow-up processes such as honing into consideration.
Anticipating further downsizing trends in the auto industry, the Liebherr chamfer cutting technology can also generate even smaller, more precise chamfers for transmission components. As the importance of a reproducibly generated chamfer increases, the smaller the gear will be.

The increasing demand from the automobile industry is a primary driver of the Portugal cutting tools market growth. Cutting tools are used for milling, grinding, and broaching automotive car parts and have a large market share in the automotive industry. With their high precision, durability, and repeatability throughout manufacturing activities, the cutting tools market is an efficient and cost-effective way to boost total productivity. The latest techniques such as high-speed cutting, dry machining, hard machining, and new cutting technology have modified the traditional approach. The vehicle industry covers various professional tool applications. In the automotive industry, carbide cutters are now commonly employed.
The market for cutting tools market in Portugal is predicted to develop during 2020-2028. The country's industrial production is growing at 3.5%, and the industry accounts for 22% of the national GDP. Portugal is located between the Atlantic Ocean and its land border with Spain, making it a great location for trade.
Moreover, the World Bank Doing Business Dataset ranks Portugal first for ease of cross-border trading. Various cutting tools, including saw blades, taps, reamers, hobs, chasers, broaches, rolling dies, drills, end mills, cutters, burrs, gear cutting tools, tool bits, and tips/inserts, are produced in Portugal. Construction, automotive, railway network, engineering, and defense industries have bolstered cutting tools market. Further, the diamond cutting tools market is the one of the fastest growing consumer of cutting tools.
The automotive manufacturing industry is the primary user of cutting tools. With the changing market situation, cutting tool manufacturers have boosted their efforts to develop and manufacture more innovative designs to meet rising client needs. Technological advancements drive the cutting tools market with workpiece production technologies such as metal injection molding, 3D printing, investment casting, and close-tolerance forging. The Portugal cutting tools market appears to be quite promising, owing to the constantly developing manufacturing industries around the country. Cutting tool usage is predicted to increase tremendously as industrial sectors grow, meeting the changing needs of clients. As a result, the share of the Portugal cutting tools market is expected to grow during the forecast period.
The overall Portugal cutting tools market size has been derived using both primary and secondary sources. Exhaustive secondary research has been conducted using internal and external sources to obtain qualitative and quantitative information related to the Portugal cutting tools market. And, because producing a branded AR/VR experience is a high-budget bet that can also rely on audiences to have tools like AR/VR headsets or the latest smartphone technology to access the content -- fewer small brands have invested in digital experiential marketing.
After just ten months of construction, the new assembly hall and connected Logistics center has been officially inaugurated on the company premises of KLINGELNBERG GmbH in Winterhagen-Hückeswagen Germany. Covering a total area of 8,000 square meters and located at the future Gustav-Adolf-Klingelnberg-Straße 1, the new facility is where Klingelnberg is now building large gear cutting machines in particular, which are destined for use in the wind power industry, among others and will be ready for move-in by 2023 at the latest.
Additive manufacturing enables cost-effective production of metal parts that, in the past, were impossible to produce with other methods. Selective sintering technology, an additive manufacturing technique that uses a laser to sinter powdered material, lets companies build metal products in-house, eliminate tooling costs, and significantly reduce development time. It has greater flexibility in shapes and materials while speeding up production and cutting costs.
Our recent findings reveal both common themes and distinct differences across regions and industries. Overall, tool use has declined worldwide since 2006. (See figure 2.) Although most executives are primarily worried about successfully tackling short-term financial pressures, they are generally optimistic about the future of their companies. We also found that established economies are much less focused on growth and innovation than emerging economies are; that's especially true in North America, where the emphasis on cost cutting is the strongest.
Another key finding: many companies are looking hard at ways beyond cost cutting to stabilize their businesses. To help achieve that goal in 2009, executives predict that they'll increase their use of all 25 management tools in our survey. Tools that promote growth are expected to have the biggest gains. 2ff7e9595c
